st helena silos precinct

On arrival at the jetty, the distant views of St Helena’s settlement and occupation capture the visitor’s attention and imagination.  Together with remnant fabric, those views as well as sight lines within the silos precinct are highly significant.

On approaching the vicinity of the silos and former sugar mill, caystone walls and artefacts of remnant buildings become visible.

Importantly, one is also able to recognise what is missing. Absence is a noteworthy aspect in the interpretation of a ruined landscape.

Preserving and enhancing the experience of these views and the interpretation of this ruined landscape were priorities of this project as well as improving safety and maintenance access.

Beatov completed concept design and final documentation with Bligh Tanner Engineers in 2019.
